Spellbound

There was an interesting article in the news this week about whether teachers should correct pupils’ spelling mistakes. A school has advised teachers not to correct more than three errors per piece of work for fear of damaging pupils’ self-confidence. Its view is that too much red pen is ‘discouraging’ for pupils. What’s your opinion on this? I’m no education expert, but surely it’s better in the long run for pupils to have their spelling corrected?

In other spelling news this week, a school in the US spelt its own name incorrectly and no one noticed for eight years! It now has to correct the mistake on signage, banners, business cards and security passes. Expensive…

Finally, the road painters have been at it again, this time in a car park in Conwy, Wales. The coach parking bays are currently labelled ‘Coashes’. Oops.
