Couldn’t agree more. Although pedantry sometimes has its place.
Pedantry for its own sake is exactly as Fry describes it: a bit silly. But pedantry with a purpose and a clear rationale, in the sense of applying agreed conventions, is useful and aids both the reader’s understanding and the ability of the author to convey their meaning. As Fry also says: “context, convention and circumstance are all”.
